Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
